Chapter 7 bankruptcy, also known as a liquidation, generally allows for the discharge of unsecured debt.  Chicago and Northwest Indiana clients who file under Chapter 7 usually are able to exempt most of their assets; so those clients actually keep their belongings.  Also, clients who are current in their payments can keep their house and cars.

FILING FOR RELIEF UNDER CHAPTER 7 STOPS:

CREDITOR HARASSMENT

As soon as you file for relief under Chapter 7 the "automatic stay"

goes into effect and no creditor or collection agency can contact you

in any way.  Creditors are also immediately barred from making any

further collection efforts.

LAWSUITS

The automatic stay also serves to immediately stop any lawsuits filed

against you. 

EVICTIONS

The automatic stay will stop evictions and you may be able to "catch

up" past-due rent and remain in your home.
